As a volunteer driven organisation and with a majority of volunteers at any one time being female there is huge empathy within the organisation for the plight of women with which we work around the world and a strong desire to 'do something' to improve their lives. Alongside this drive is the recognition that women are the more effective 'agents for change' within their communities. These impulses led to the creation of the AWF's Dragonfly Project.
The Dragonfly Project seeks to explore ways of collaborating with women in ways which support them and their communities whilst working towards the protection of their natural environment. Working with women is at the heart of the AWF's Genesis Project and micro-finance support for women at the heart of its True Fair programme. In London: The AWF has offices in Covent Garden, London and is keen to engage with women's groups across the capital. As an organisation with a global reach we are particularly interested to meet with groups that have connections around the world. We are hosting workshops on March 13th 2013 (1.00pm- 5.00pm) at Neal's Yard Meeting Rooms in Covent Garden. Invited are women's groups from across London. The aim of the workshops will be to discuss ways through which our volunteer network can work with and on women's issues: advocacy, campaigning, fundraising, education, volunteering. We are particularly interested in a global perspective and interested in listening to what is possible and needed. If you would like to attend please contact dragonfly@whalenation.org
In Sri Lanka we are funding our first local women's community project in Kandy. We will fund and resource an office and its local management. This will be the channel through which we provide micro-finance support to local women as well as funds for such as education. In Romania we will collaborate with the sex trafficking section of the Centre for Democracy. The country has a huge problem with young girls being trafficked for sex. Because girls are given no support when they are repatriated they more often than not end up being trafficked again in a vicious downward spiral. The Centre aims to build a refuge that will give the girls a fighting chance to reintegrate into society. No such centre currently exists! This is a major fundraising exercise for the AWF.
