Romania is an ancient and proud country, its language is romance, from the Roman occupation of its lands over 2000 years ago, and it is surrounded by Slavic nations. Its isolation has given it a rugged and colourful personality and it is rich both in nature and in traditions. It is also a very poor country following decades of suffering under communist dictatorship.

There are some 1300 neglected and abandoned stately homes and castles in the country and the AWF plans to form a collaboration with the owners of one such property in order to renovate the property as a base for a full range of AWF programmes in support of the surrounding community.

This is a very exciting opportunity which is being framed under an AWF project 'Romania Re-cunoaste'

Presentations will be made to Pro Patrimonio, Romania's National Trust Autumn 2011 and, hopefully, collaborations identified and agreed before the end of the year.
Normal AWF rates apply
Pounds/ Euro 110pw for stays of four weeks or more (dearer for shorter stays- see booking form), includes multi bedded and simple accommodation. Volunteers work on a variety of projects but can focus on areas of specific interest for such as dissertations. See booking form for all information on booking. Participants must check out their own national guidelines regarding entry visas and inoculations. ALL volunteers must provide evidence of comprehensive medical insurance covering repatriation in worst case scenario

About Romania
Romania is the twelfth largest country in Europe (the largest within the South-eastern European region). The capital of Romania is Bucharest and it has the seventh largest population in the European Union with around 20 million people. With the fall of the Iron Curtain in198 Romania moved towards a democracy, joining the European Union in January 2007.

The countries landscape can be evenly divided between mountainous and lowland territories. The centre of the country is largely dominated by the Carpathian mountain range. Due to its location, Romania experiences a temperate to continental climate with four distinct seasons. There are 13 protected national parks and 3 biosphere reserves. It also has one of the largest undisturbed forests in Europe. Romania enjoys an enormous range of European animals including Brown Bears, Wolves and their national animal, the Eurasian Lynx. There are around 3,700 species of plants including different varieties of oak, sycamores, beeches, spruces, willow and pine trees. All which can be categorised under three different Zones- Alpine, Forest and Steppe.
